Mobilisation & Demobilisation in Offshore

Blog

Anyone working in or for the offshore industry knows that a campaign doesn’t start at sea, it begins at the quay. Preparing a vessel to be fully project-ready is an intensive operation where technology, safety and logistics come together. At Broekman Logistics, we don’t see mobilisation and demobilisation as isolated actions, but as crucial links in a much broader offshore supply chain. Robin van de Graaf zooms in.

The terminal as foundation for mobilisation

Preparing a vessel always starts with solid infrastructure. Our terminal with deep-sea quay in the port of Rotterdam, 600 metres long with a 10.50-metre draught, accommodates installation vessels, supply vessels and construction vessels operating on offshore projects in the North Sea and beyond. In addition, we have a 150-metre barge quay with a 3.5-metre draught, enabling efficient handling of barges and smaller workboats.

Once a vessel is moored, mobilisation begins: containers, spare parts, ROV units, winches, tools, cables and project structures are brought on board under the supervision of our team. With quay cranes offering up to 120 tonnes of lifting capacity and a terminal designed for heavy and out-of-gauge cargo, we can carry out this work safely and in a structured manner.

But mobilisation is more than loading. It’s about creating clarity, sequence and safety so that a vessel can operate effectively for weeks or even months.

Demobilisation: the complex final phase of Offshore projects

Offshore Logistics

Demobilisation is often even more complex than mobilisation. Equipment returns in varying conditions: sometimes contaminated, sometimes damaged, sometimes in greater quantities than expected. Everything must be unloaded, sorted, assessed, recorded and redirected to storage, new projects or back to suppliers.

This is where process knowledge truly matters. Our terminal team, together with our customs and transport departments, ensures that materials are processed accurately and meet all administrative requirements. No loose ends; something of great value in offshore projects.

Broekman Logistics Offshore Project Terminal

An offshore network that extends beyond Rotterdam

For many southern North Sea projects, Rotterdam is the logistics hub. But for offshore wind projects in the north, we also support operations from Eemshaven. There, we assist vessels through port and protective agency services, arrange bunkering requests and coordinate logistics flows around offshore wind installations. We act as an intermediary between the vessel and local port authorities, customs officers and regulatory bodies. In addition, we provide freight forwarding services for sea freight, air freight and road transport. This combination of locations gives us the flexibility to support clients in both southern and northern project zones.

Compliance and Safety as a cornerstone in Offshore projects

Offshore operators work under strict safety and quality regulations. Clients want to know exactly which processes we follow and how we manage risks. Compliance is therefore not an afterthought for us, but a fundamental requirement. With up-to-date permits, ISPS procedures, SHEQ structures and full transparency in our working methods, we provide the assurance needed for large-scale offshore projects.

Mobilisation and demobilisation are not just the start and finish of a campaign. They define the quality of the entire project. And that begins with a terminal designed to shoulder that responsibility.
