Celebrating 45 Years in Born: A Blend of Technology, Humanity, and Professionalism

News

Broekman Logistics Limburg in Born is celebrating its 45th anniversary – a milestone that offers a moment of reflection on the company’s rich history and the people who’ve contributed to its success. Three colleagues – Susan Geurts, Ger Schrijen, and Nico Derks – offer their perspectives on how Broekman has grown into the versatile logistics service provider it is today.

Susan has been with Broekman Logistics for nineteen years. She began her career in administration, which was then focused entirely on the automotive sector. Over time, she transitioned into the gatehouse, where she now welcomes drivers and visitors. Yet administration has remained part of her day-to-day, and she now combines both roles from the gatehouse. “What I love most about my job is the interaction with the drivers,” Susan says. “If you treat them with respect and explain how things work here, you build a sense of mutual understanding. That connection makes the work meaningful – especially with so many different nationalities and personalities coming through each day.”

A family spirit that endures

For Ger, Broekman Logistics has been a constant throughout much of his life. He joined Intramast in 1977 and was there when Broekman Logistics took over the Born site in 1979. “Back then, everything was done manually,” Ger recalls. “Pen, paper, typewriters. Now, it’s a fully digital operation. It’s been incredible to witness that entire transformation up close.”

Despite the company growing from just 25 employees in the early days to over 150 today, Ger insists the family feeling has never been lost. “That sense of solidarity and commitment is still very much at the heart of our culture.”

Nico, a long-standing member of the technical team, began his career in Born as early as 1973 and also experienced the transition to Broekman Logistics in 1979. He reflects fondly on the challenges and innovations over the decades. “We used to design a lot ourselves – even systems for cleaning vehicles. We also helped set up the Rotterdam Car Center. Those were great times, when teamwork and technical expertise really came together.”

Though he officially retired nine years ago, Nico still stays involved. “I still lend a hand with technical projects – updating evacuation plans, that sort of thing. I just enjoy staying active and connected to the business.”

Kubota as a catalyst for change

Broekman Logistics Limburg 45 Years

One of the biggest shifts in Broekman Logistics’ history has been the evolution from a purely automotive-focused company into a full-service logistics provider. A key turning point came with the arrival of Kubota as a client. The Japanese machinery manufacturer opened new doors, showing that value-added logistics services extend far beyond just the automotive industry.

“For our customer Kubota, present in the machinery segment, we customise several machinery to fit end-customer needs, explains Nico. That was an eye-opener – realising that we could add value in other ways, beyond vehicles.”

Customisation and value creation remain central to Broekman’s approach. Ger sees this as a key strength: “We always aim to meet the customer’s expectations – whether that’s modifying machinery or providing customised logistics solutions. It takes experience, insight, and a mindset that’s focused on thinking with the client.”

A culture for long-term commitment

As Broekman Logistics has grown, the company has naturally changed. “In the past, people were more inclined to jump in and help each other without hesitation,” Ger notes. “These days, with more staff and structured decision-making, the dynamic has shifted slightly.”

Nico agrees. “It’s less common now for people to stay at one company for decades. But that’s what makes it even more special that so many of our people have – some for twenty, thirty, even forty years.”

What continues to set Broekman Logistics Limburg apart is the unique blend of technical expertise, personal connection, and professional pride. Susan values the everyday contact with drivers; Ger appreciates the balance between digitalisation and camaraderie; and Nico remains loyal to his passion for engineering. Together, their stories reflect a company that’s grown without losing sight of its values.
