How does Cross-docking Boost Logistics Agility?

Blog

Efficiency in logistics is the culmination of numerous strategies working in harmony, and among these, cross-docking stands out as a specialised technique that brings its unique set of advantages. It’s about optimising the process for smoother, quicker turns. How do you keep cargo flowing without unnecessary stops?

We discuss this with Leonard Bruynzeel, Branch Manager at Broekman Logistics Maasvlakte because he knows exactly how. With years of hands-on experience in both operational and client-focused logistics, he lives and breathes the rhythm of the supply chain. “I started my career at a transshipment company,” Leonard begins. “That’s where I discovered the fast-paced world of cross-docking—the speed, the switching, the coordination of shipments across Europe. It hooked me from day one.”

What exactly is cross-docking?

“Think of cross-docking like a Formula 1 pit stop,” Leonard explains. “Goods—both ADR and non-ADR—arrive and are back on the move in no time, without ever going into storage. That accelerates the supply chain, cuts warehousing costs, and prevents demurrage and detention.”

Here’s how it works—simple, but highly effective:

  1. Inbound: Goods arrive at our cross-dock facility.
  2. Sorting and screening: Everything is checked and organised for the next leg.
  3. Staging: Temporarily placed at the right bay, ready for dispatch.
  4. Loading: Items are loaded strategically, optimising outbound routes.
  5. Dispatch: Off they go—on their way to the final destination.

Why is cross-docking so valuable for customers?

Boosting Logistics Agility

“Time is money,” says Leonard. “Our clients want quick turnaround and minimal storage. We ensure that goods are moving again within 24 to 48 hours. For instance, goods collected from various locations in the Port of Rotterdam are consolidated at our Maasvlakte warehouse and then exported—say, to India. It requires sharp planning and seamless coordination.”

We also offer a range of Value-Added Services (VAS):

  • Palletising: Securing loose cargo onto pallets for safer and easier transport.
  • Labelling: Applying product or customs labels for identification and compliance.
  • Customs clearance: Ensuring smooth customs processes and cross-border formalities, including customs clearance

How does technology support the process?

“Technology is our silent powerhouse,” Leonard notes. “With our Warehouse Management System (WMS), we log every move in real-time. Inbound goods are immediately scanned, tracked, and processed without delay. This minimises errors and provides complete visibility across the supply chain.”

There’s also CargoSnap—a smart digital tool for instant cargo documentation. “No paperwork, no hassle. Every shipment is photographed and recorded digitally—from loading dock to final destination. This means our customers always have insight into the status of their cargo.”

What Type of Cargo is often Cross-docked?

Cross-docking for both hazardous and non-hazardous cargo

“Cross-docking works best for perishable goods, products in high demand, and shipments that need to get somewhere quickly. This includes both hazardous and non-hazardous goods. We handle, among others types, deep sea cargo that arrives in 40ft containers and is further distributed into 45ft containers. The deep sea cargo is then transformed into short sea cargo. Cross-docking is also suitable in vice versa handling processes, short sea to deep sea.” mentions Leonard Bruynzeel.

What’s next for cross-docking?

Leonard lights up when talking about the future: “Cross-docking is gaining momentum, especially with growing trade between Europe and countries like India. India’s economy is booming, and we’re tapping into that by offering tailored logistics solutions. With over 20 years of local presence in India, we’re developing cross-dock solutions that connect regions more efficiently than ever. By combining local expertise with our strong Rotterdam network, we strengthen international supply chains from both ends.”

Whether it’s containers full of machinery, chemicals, or industrial goods, Leonard and his team at Maasvlakte make sure the logistics engine never slows down. “At the end of the day,” he says, “it’s all about one thing: ensuring the customer doesn’t face delays. That’s what drives us.”
