Can you introduce yourself and tell us about your role at Broekman Logistics?

“My name is Martijn van der Most, SHEQ Coordinator at Broekman Logistics Maasvlakte, and I have been working at Broekman Logistics for 3,5 years, during which I spent the first half-year as an intern in warehousing. I completed my studies in Safety and Security Management and as a part of the Safety Health Environtment Quality (SHEQ) team at our Rotterdam locations, I am responsible for ensuring the safety, health, environment, and quality of our Maasvlakte location.”

What do you find most interesting about your role at Broekman Logistics?

“One of the most fascinating aspects of my work is operating in a Seveso environment where we deal with hazardous substances. Properly managing and storing these substances presents unique challenges and significant responsibilities. We must ensure compliance with strict regulations and guidelines to safeguard the safety of both our employees and the environment.”

Why is safety and health so important in your role, especially when dealing with hazardous substances?

“Safety and health are of paramount importance in our work. Working with hazardous substances demands meticulous handling. We understand that the consequences of an accident involving hazardous substances can be far-reaching; thus, we take safety matters very seriously. Protecting the well-being of our employees and minimising risks are at the core of our daily operations.”

What measures do you take to ensure the safety and health of employees when handling hazardous substances?

“To ensure the safety and health of employees at our location, we take stringent measures regarding the handling of hazardous substances. This includes following prescribed procedures for handling these substances, using appropriate protective equipment, and ensuring a safe storage environment. We conduct regular inspections and audits to verify compliance with legal requirements and to identify areas for improvement.”

What are main priorities for enhancing safety and reducing risks in your role within a Seveso environment?

“Our goal for the future is to consistently strive for improved safety performance and risk reduction. We continue to invest in training and education for our employees, ensuring they are well-informed about specific safety procedures and the risks associated with working with hazardous substances. Additionally, we aim to continuously evaluate and enhance our processes and facilities, thereby maintaining a safe and Seveso-compliant environment.”
