“When The Ocean Cleanup first contacted us through the Port of Rotterdam, we were very honoured”, says Rob van Dijk, Director Operations Breakbulk Terminals. “This organisation is a worldwide phenomenon.”

The Ocean Cleanup recently announced that clean-up system, System 001/B, successfully captured and collected plastic debris in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. After this announcement the whole world will be following the developments of the full-scale clean-up system, System 002. “Learning that for the past four years they have also been working on a secret side project was already surprising, but finding out that they would like to reveal this project to the world at our Terminal, was even more exciting.”

Broekman Logistics Distriport is located in the Botlek, reaches a total surface of 270.000 m2 and has a 630 metres long quay with a draft of 12,65 metres. Total open storage amounts to 225.000 m2, whereas covered storage is 45.000 m2, part of which is situated in our All Weather Terminal.

This proved to be the ideal location for The Ocean Cleanup’s event.

“Hosting this event for The Ocean Cleanup also fits our CSR philosophy”, adds Rutger Bonsel, General Manager Marketing.

Broekman Logistics recently launched its first Corporate Social Responsibility report, “The past couple of months provided insights on the effects our business has on our environment. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) reference table and the report helps us to take the next steps. Taking responsibility for our actions, by creating better and more sustainable ways of doing business”, Bonsel says.

“To be able to facilitate a location for The Ocean Cleanup’s event is a great honour and experience for Broekman Logistics”, Van Dijk concludes.
